Our Butterfly Story

As our year finished and I was putting things away in the classroom, I found a book written by the SK girls in the class. I thought it would be a fitting end of year post to highlight the amazing learning that has taken place in our classroom. I hope you all have a wonderful summer.

This Spring, we enjoyed raising two rounds of Painted Lady Butterflies.

Here is our story as written by the SK girls:

We found a box one day. It was a mystery box! We showed the box to all of the classes and asked what they thought was in it.

When we opened the box there were baby caterpillars. They were tiny and black.

The caterpillars grew up and shed some skin. We watched them all day. Some people held the caterpillars. It was fun!

One day, we got a measuring tape and we put some caterpillars on it to have races. Some caterpillars moved fast and some were going the wrong way!

Then the caterpillars went onto the lids of their containers and started to twist and move. Then they were in cocoons.

They stayed in cocoons for 1 week and then the cocoons started to change colour. They started to go orange and black.

The butterflies came out of the cocoons and the wings were all wrinkled. The butterflies squeezed red liquid into their wings and it made the wings straight so they could fly.

The butterflies ate the oranges we put at the bottom of the net. We changed them everyday.

Then we said goodbye to our butterflies in the forest and in the field. So if you see a painted lady butterfly this summer, be sure to wave and say hello! It may be one from our class!
