Hi Families,
What a wonderful year it has been working and learning with you! Since next week we will not be at school on Friday this is our last Bluejay blog of the year! Just a reminder that Thursday is a half day and we will finish at noon.
We have our Primary Play Day monday morning, our Kindergarten Picnic Monday at noon, and our Bluejays meet their Grade 1 teachers on Tuesday afternoon!
Here are some stories from the week.
Beanstalks
Our Beans are growing and getting so big! We think we might get to eat them next week!
Nature Walk
On Tuesday we went on a nature walk and had a picnic at the park. We made kites in the classroom and tried them out in the wind! We also read the story 'Stuck' and giggled together as the boy in the story tried everything he could to get his red kite out of the tree! We also played a great game of'Guess my Word'. Students picked a word and their friends had to guess letters to solve the puzzle!
Grade 5 Science Fair
On Monday, we went to the gym to see the Grade 5 Science Fair! They taught us all about the human body - the brain, the heart, and the stomach! Science is cool!
Cleaning Up
We have worked as a team this week to clean up our classroom. We took our toys and show bins outside to wash them and then carefully put things away.
Bluejay Graduation
On Thursday, it was Bluejay Graduation! Everyone looked amazing and our gym was beautiful! Our favourite part was going on stage to tell what we want to be when we grow up!
Food Tuck Party
Thursday evening was Black Walnut's first food truck party! There was a huge crowd but it was such a fun time! It was great to see our friends and families there! Thank you so much for supporting our school!!
Have a wonderful summer and we'll see you in September!
This Blog is a space where the learning in our classroom can be celebrated! Our SK students (The Bluejays) will document their learning here by listing, planning, photographing, and writing to you about the highlights of our week, though the eyes of the students.

Our Week - June 11-15
Hi Families,
It is hard to believe that we are halfway through June! We had a wonderful week and are getting ready for another wonderful week since Bluejay graduation is next Thursday (from 10am-12pm). We will hopefully be seeing our Bluejay parents Thursday morning.
Here are some stories from the week.
Garden Time
On Monday, we went out to the garden to water our butterfly garden. We had fun using the hose to fill the watering cans and to spray the plants. We also watered our tree.
Markham Fair Art
On Tuesday we did art for the Markham Fair. Some kids went to different kindergarten classes to make drawings of people, masks, paintings, and cut and paste crafts . In our class we made pictures using fabric and yard.
Love Box
We decorated a love box to give to kids who have to go to the hospital. We made cards for the kids to help make them feel better and we also got some donations of toys, books, stickers, and art supplies to put in our box.
Grade 1 Recess
All week we practised Grade 1 recess so that we're ready for Grade 1. We ate snack with Mrs.Davidson's class and then we went to the big yard with them.
Snails
We are still having fun taking care of the snails. Yesterday, we cleaned out the tank because it was very messy. We gave the snails food too. They like to eat broccoli, carrots, and lettuce and we are trying to find out if they like to eat tomatoes.
Father's Day
We all got our photos taken and we made a frame for our Dads. We also painted pictures of our Dads for Father's Day. We got to wrap our surprises with green and blue paper.
Our Vegetable Garden
We were so happy to see that our vegetable garden has actually grown some vegetables! We found little peas growing on the vines and we picked them on Thursday. We only found 5 so Ms. Boag bought a few more for us and we all got to try them! We also noticed that our beanstalks have little white flowers growing. That means that soon we might have beans growing that we can taste.

Our Week - June 5 - 8
Hi Families,
Here are some stories from the week.
Todd Parr
We have continued our Todd Parr art this week. We painted our hair and gave ourselves fun hairstyles!
Snails
On our Tuesday nature walk we made a big discovery!! Because of all the rain there were so many snails! At first we had to look very carefully to find them in the grass and then we realized they were everywhere!! We all took a turn picking up a snail (or 2 or 3) and we collected them and brought them back to our class! We have kept some as pets and we were excited to see that they laid little white eggs! We put the snails on black paper and watched them make slimy tracks. We also painted pictures of the snails as they moved around.
New Chickadees
On Thursday, our new Chickadees came to visit Kindergarten. Ms. Ancona and Ms. Boag got to meet them and we worked with Mrs. Darlow in the small gym. Some of the new Chickadees are our little brothers and sisters - they are going to have so much fun!
Recess
We are so excited for next week because on Monday we all get to try a new kind of recess. Our Bluejay friends get to go to Grade 1 classes and eat our snack with them. Then we get to go on the big field with the big kids for recess. The Chickadees get to practise being Bluejays. This means that they get to go out on the small field for recess.
Outside Painting
Mrs. Darlow and her husband made us some special painting boards. they are clear rectangles. We put them outside on the fence so that we can paint on them. Thank you Mrs. Darlow!!
Pinecone Animals
The Bluejays made animals out of pine cones this week. We had lots of different kinds of pine cones and had to plan and gather materials. Ms. Boag used the glue gun to put the pieces together for us.
Bluejay Writing
This week we learned about writing sentences. A sentence is a short story and it needs a big letter at the front (capitol) and a dot at the end (period). We made sentences about our pine cones and about pictures we drew and about our snail paintings.

Our Week - May 28 - June 1
Hi Families,
It's nearing the end of the year - our last month in Kindergarten! We are getting ready for new experiences and getting ready to say hello to new friends. Please remember that on Monday June 4th it is a P.A Day - this is not a school day. Also, beginning next week, the bluejays will be trying out Grade 1 recess. This means we are going to go to the big field!! We are so excited!
Here are some stories from the week.
Bike to School Week
This week Black Walnut participated in Bike to School Week. We got stickers and prizes if we biked to school or rode a scooter - but we had to be wearing a helmet. Biking to school is a great way to get exercise!!
Nature Art
On Monday, we went to the forest to do some nature painting. We took paint, paper, paint brushes, water, and clipboards for our experience. We were very surprised to see afterwards that we all got mosquito bites!
Water Table and Big Buddies
Our Big Buddies were writing a big test this week (EQAO) so for a break some buddies came down to visit us. We went outside with them and tried out our water tables. It was relaxing to measure, pour, and splash with our big buddies.
Todd Parr
Ms. Darlow has started a special painting project with us. We are all getting to paint ourselves like the characters from Todd Parr's books. We had to draw our heads very big and the next step will be to paint them.
Graduation Preparations
We are begging to practise songs for our Kinder Grad. We really like our songs but we can't sing them for you...they're a secret! Stay tuned - and remember that SK grad is on Thursday June 21 in the morning.
New Chickadees
Thursday night, Ms. Boag and Ms. Ancona got to visit with some new families and new chickadees who are coming to Kindergarten! We are so excited to meet them! They are coming in next week!
Making Labels
This week we were learning a new way to write. We learned about labels. You can label anything! It is a way to name something important so that other people know what it is. First, we labelled our classroom. Then, we labelled ourselves. Last, we labelled pictures we made and pictures from books. Writing is so much fun!
