Our Week - April 23 - 26

Hi Families,

We hope you enjoyed your long weekend together. Please check your child's folder for information on our upcoming Movie Night on May 2nd. The kids are very excited!

Here are some stories,

Earth Day Garbage Pick Up
On Tuesday we celebrated Earth Day. Mrs. Darlow took us outside on our nature walk to do an Earth Day scavenger hunt! We also worked together to pick up garbage and help the Earth! We wore gloves and used tongs and had to sort the litter we found into garbage and recycling! We also worked on a school mural of our butterfly garden. We found different flowers and put them on the mural.

Mystery Bags
Ms. Tamaki made us mystery bags to go at our measurement centre. They are all closed and have different things inside. We had to measure them using our hands and a scale to find out which one was the heaviest and which was the lightest.

Rhyming Pop
We have been playing Rhyming Pop this week! We have to look at the picture on our bubble and find a partner who has a match! We are becoming rhyming experts!

Ms. Tamaki
On Wednesday, it was Ms. Tamaki's last day. We have loved having her work and learn with us and we will miss her a lot! She gave us each a tub of play-doh and we gave her a book that we made!

Piggie Rhymes
We read The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs and made our own pigs. We gave our pigs a name and then made a silly rhyme to match.

Puppet Show Movie Theatre
Since next week it is Movie Night at Black Walnut we decided to turn our Puppet Show into a puppet show movie theatre. We have made tickets, a popcorn machine, and a juice machine.

Jump Rope for Heart
On Thursday, we went outside to skip for Jump Rope for Heart. We did really well and were so excited when we learned to skip for the first time. We got to dance, play with chalk, and use hula hoops too! Black Walnut raised over $5300.00 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation! Way to Go Wolverines!

Reading Rhymes
A Bluejay brought in a story to read to the class. She chose it from her house because it was full of rhymes! She sat in our teacher chair and read to us!

Worm Saving
On Friday, it was raining again. We went outside to look for worms that had come out of the ground. We found the biggest worms ever! One was as long as Ms. Boag's rain boot! We brought them inside and gave them some dirt to sleep in. We gave them some cucumber and some banana peel too in case they get hungry!

We took some out of our dirt and put them onto brown paper so we could measure them. One was 8 cubes long, one was 10 cubes long, and one was 12 cubes! It was a great day!

Our Week - April 8 - 12

Hi Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at last night's parent engagement evening - A Night of Modern Learning! We hope you enjoyed learning more about the excellent programming happening at Black Walnut! If you attended you will be receiving an e-mail with a survey link. We'd love your feedback.

Here are some stories from the week:

Monday Surprise!
We surprised Ms. Boag on Monday by making her a card and a present for her birthday!

Balancing
Ms. Tamaki started teaching us about weight, mass, and balancing this week. We learned to compare things to see what is heavier and what was lighter. We created paper scales to see what was heavier and lighter and started to use different balance scales.

Pink Day
Wednesday was Day of Pink and we had lots of it in our classroom! We created kindness messages to create a friendship chain and made Pink Day scratch art!
The Chickadees and new Bluejays were so excited to sign our school's Pink Day banner. We signed it when we were Chickadees and we tried to find our names on the banner! We all promise to be a buddy and not a bully and to be kind to everyone!

Coding
Ms. Boag brought some new coding friends to visit the classroom. She introduced us to Botley and Cubetto and we got to try to move them around by creating codes. Cubetto moves on a map so we had him move different places - like the mountains or the ocean. Botley has special arms so we used him to try to score a goal!

Rhyming
We are learning about rhyming in Kindergarten and we started by singing a favourite song - down by the bay! We have rhyming eggs that we use too! We have to match the pieces to make a whole egg!

Elephant and Piggie
We have started reading Elephant and Piggie stories again because they are just too funny! We've made puppets and masks so that we can put on a show of our favourite Elephant and Piggie tales! Stay tuned....

Our Week(s) in Kindergarten - March 25 - April 5

Hi Families,

Thank you so much for being a part of our Spring concert - Under the Sea - we hope you enjoyed! We had a lot of fun putting it together!
Since we were busy last week, enjoy stories from the past 2 weeks.

Concert
That's a wrap! Our under the Sea concert was a success! We loved singing O Canada in sign language and singing Moana's song with all the Kindie classes but our favourite was our Octopus Song! We worked really hard to make our own hats and each got to choose a kazoo to wear as a necklace. We painted pictures of ocean animals to decorate the walls and did lots of practises and we think we did a great job!

Measuring
Ms. Tamaki has been teaching us about measuring. We have learned about length and height so far. We measured each other to see who was the tallest kid in class and the shortest kid in class. We also did a scavenger hunt to find long and short things.

Textile Drive
Our Bag2Bag challenge was amazing! We filled more than half of the truck with used clothes and old fabrics and towels and sheets! We watched the truck get filled up and watched the driver weigh the truck to see how heavy it was. He put a scale under the wheel and drove over it! He gave us a cheque for $340 for our donations!!!

Blue Shirt Day
On Tuesday, It was Blue Shirt day for Autism awareness. We learned that it's ok to be different or to learn in a different way. We're all kids who love to learn and be at school and we can all be friends! We read the story Red, which was about a blue crayon with a red wrapper. He felt different and just didn't fit in at first, but he found ways to show what he was good at!

Building Challenge
Ms. Tamaki has given us building challenges in our construction centre. First she asked us to build something taller than her structure. Next, she made a river and asked us to make a bridge to help the animals cross! What will she come up with next!

Kinder Star Assembly
Thursday was our Kinder Star assembly. We sang 'Hello to All the Children of the World'. We like this song because we get to say hello in different languages! We also got to make flags! We really like painting!

Growing Patterns
We worked with our pattern blocks this week to try to make patterns that grew. We started with simple shapes like trees and flowers and made them grow and grow! We made step 1 and step 2 together and then made the next steps on our own. For some shape patterns we could tell you how to make step 10!

Upcoming
Pink Shirt Day is April 10th - Be a buddy and not a bully and wear a pink shirt. Anyone can wear pink - boys and girls! We are all friends no matter what kind or colour of clothes we wear!
