Dear Families,
We have enjoyed our week working and learning in Nature and learning about people and the world around us. Here are some stories.
Planting and Gardening
This week we were in charge of Black Walnut's Butterfly garden. It was our job to water the garden, pull out weeds, and water our trees. We planted new plants (sedum, chelone, violets) and put wildflower seeds into the garden. While we were digging we looked at plant roots and leaves and we found many many worms!! We painted new rocks to decorate the garden too.
Ms. Boag also taught us a new tag game called 'seed tag'. The person who is it is the gardener and when they touch someone they become the planted seeds. You are back in the game when someone taps you on the head and pretends to water the plants.
Outdoor Classroom Day
On Wednesday we celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day. First, we watched other classes celebrate Outdoor Classroom day by looking out our window and then it was our turn! We read a story, did a math scavenger hunt, and went to the forest for 'sit spot exploring'. This is when you sit queitly on a special mat and look and listen to the forest around you. We used nature frames to take pictures of special things we saw in the forest.
Nature Walk
On Friday, we went to the forest for our nature walk. We took tarps, mats, and ropes out with us and tried to build shelters and forts. It was hard work since it was a little windy but we had a lot of fun!
Ice Cream Shop Update
We are continuing to create our classroom Ice Cream Shop. This week we added some server uniforms so our clothes don't get dirty and we added a cash register and money so that people can buy our ice cream! We learned about the penny, nickel, quarter, and dime and practised counting by 1s, 5s, 10s, and 25s.
Celebrating Ramadan
A beautiful pretend Mosque was donated to our school to help celebrate the month of Ramadan. We went to look at it and learned about Ramadan and Mosques from 2 Grade 5 student experts.
Beanstalks
Last week we planted bean seeds. On Friday, we were excited to see that our beans are growing! We have very tiny beanstalks growing in our K-Pen. Maybe they will be as tall as they sky after our long weekend!
