Making a Dentist Office

Hi Families,

We have been working hard since coming back to school in January to create our classroom dentist office. It is called the Bluejay Chickadee Dentist Office! Here are some stories about our work.

Letter Writing
The Bluejays worked together to write a letter to our local Dentists. That had some important questions and we hoped that Dentists would be able to help us gather the materials we didn't have for our office. We sent out the letter to 4 Dentists and we heard back from all of them! Dr. Nightingale, Dr. Chen, Dr. Chari, and Dr. Thapar wrote amazing answers and really helped move our learning along! So of course we wrote them Thank You letters!

Books
We needed some more examples and pictures to build ideas so we wrote another letter. This time we wrote to our School's Librarian Ms. Dias. We asked her for some books and she wrote us back too!

Patient Records
In some of the books we learned that people that visit the Dentist are called 'patients'. We decided to make our own patient records so that we had information on each student when they came to visit the office. We asked how old you were and what allergies they had. We looked carefully in the mirror to count the teeth in our mouths too!

Dentist Art, Writing and Games
We each made a mask to wear when we are the dentist so that we don't spread germs. The Bluejay boys made a list together of important words we might need at the Dentist office and put it in our centre. We also took photos of each other to create a guessing game called 'Whose Teeth'. It is a hard game! We have to guess who is who.

Tooth Fairy
One of the books Ms. Dias gave us was about people around the world and what they do with teeth that come out. We learned about many different countries. Did you know that some people turn their baby teeth into jewelry? Or that some countries leave their teeth under the pillow or in a cup for a magic mouse to collect. We all made stories of our own to imagine what we will do when our baby teeth fall out.

Healthy Foods
We played the game Greedy Gorilla to learn about foods that are healthy for our teeth and maybe not so healthy. We also learned that cheese, fruit, vegetables, and meat are best for our teeth and NOT candy!

Our Visit!!
Today was the best day! Dr. Nightingale came to visit the class! We had 13 more questions to ask him so we all took turns and he answered them all! He brought giant teeth to show us how to brush and floss and had special glasses with a light on so he can see in people's mouths. We asked him if the Tooth Fairy is real and she IS! We know because Dr. Nightingale called her on his cell phone and put her on speaker phone! We all said hi! It was amazing!!

We are all very excited for our school's dental screening next week
