Dear Families,
Here are some stories from our busy week written by our Bluejay (SK) students.
On Monday, we finished our Chicka Chicka Letters and sent them in the mail. Soon schools all around Canada will get our letter Ds and we will get different letters in return!
On Tuesday, We began making our mural for the Markham Fair! We made birds, bees, grasshoppers, flowers, and a big tree!
On Wednesday, we went on our first Nature Walk! We crossed the street to visit the local woodlot. We saw so many grasshoppers all in the grass. We tried to catch them but they were too fast! Some funny grasshoppers landed on our friends!
Our biggest surprise was in the afternoon when we found a grasshopper in our classroom! He must have followed us home!
On Thursday we finished our mural to enter in the Markham Fair Art Competition! It is all about our backyard! We used things we found on our nature walk (sticks, pine cones, bee hive pieces) to make our mural! Some of our classmates also made scarecrows! We have a Fairy Scarecrow and a Pumpkin Head Scarecrow to enter in the fair!
On Friday we celebrated Banana Face Day! Lots of us brought banana snacks and we had fun making different kinds of faces! We know our friend Savani would have loved them. We also painted faces on different vegetables. Thank you for sending in these fun items!
Our year is coming to a close! Here are some stories from this week!
Graduation
The Bluejays are going to Grade 1 soon! We think we might have homework in Grade 1 but we get to go in the big kid field for recess!
We are graduating next week. Some of the Bluejays are sad and some of the Bluejays are happy. We hope to see you there!
Sorting Clay
We sorted clay on Thursday. At first, the clay was all mixed and squished together. It was very hard. We didn't want to throw it away so we decided to fix it!
We sorted the pieces we could and then mixed the other pieces to make new colours. We have a little bit left and then we are done!
Father's Day
We are making a secret for Father's Day. We can't tell our Dads what we are making for them. It is a surprise but on Father's Day we can tell them!
Castle Making
Our class found a game on TVO Kids called 'Castle Construction'. We printed instructions for making our own castle! We needed a cereal box, paper rolls, a background, signs, a moat, and most important - flags and a stone wall!
Now it is finished and we can play with it in our construction centre!
Play Day
On Monday we had a Play Day. Lots of people were good at blowing bubbles. We liked popping the bubbles the most. So many people loved the parachute because we get to sit inside it. Inside the parachute, it looks like it is glowing. We used the parachute to make beach balls go up into the sky. We liked Play Day a lot because it was so much fun!
Nests
Ms. Boag got a real next from her backyard. We brought it to the forest to look at. In the forest, we made nests of our own out of wood, sticks, grass, and leaves. Some of us made big nests or small ones. We did not have mud to stick the nest pieces together, but they did look like real nests.

Chapter Books
We are reading chapter books together. Last week we finished 'Butterfly Battle'. Now we are reading 'Dinosaur Detective'. They are both Magic School Bus Chapter Books!
Marker Sort
On Tuesday we sorted markers into piles of 10 and put an elastic around them. We counted by 10's becaue it's faster than counting by 1's and we wanted to find out how many we had. We ended up with 791 markers! We sent them to Crayola colour cycle this week!
Lid Sort
After our marker sort, we brought the lids into our classroom. We sorted by colour and made a list of how many colours we had and how many of each colour there were. It was not easy but our friends worked together and counted each colour. Then we added them on a calculator. We counted 600 lids!
Jiggi Jump
On Thursday we went to Jiggi Jump! We did lots of dancing and lots of running but nobody was tired because it was so much fun! We also did lots of singing! Jiggi Jump is so fun because we get to jump and dance. We got to play beach ball bop too! The girl was named Jayme but we don't remember the boy's name.
Our Public Library Visit!
We visited Ryan the librarian in our library upstairs. We learned that the has library video games, books,and movies, and we can borrow them if we have a library card!
Bye Bye Butterflies!
We released out butterflies on Wednesday. We needed to let them go so carefully so they didn't get hurt. It was a bit windy so we released them in the forest. We left them some oranges too.
A Very Hungry Caterpillar
A soon as we let go of our Painted Ladies, we found a new caterpillar on the leaves! We named him the Very Hungry Caterpillar because he eats so much! It is a different kind of caterpillar called a Tent Caterpillar.
We have decided to make a very hungry caterpillar show of our own. We are using play dog to make the pictures.

Here are some stories from our week. We have been busy!
Non-Fiction Fridays
We have had Non-Fiction Fridays for a couple of weeks now. Every Friday, we read a non-fiction book to learn new things about birds, spiders, sand, eggs, outer space, and tarantulas. Non- Fiction means real life and information. We learned about robins last week and this week read a book called 'Actual Size'. I wonder what we will learn about next week!
Marigolds
Our plants are growing...most of them - some are not yet, but we will be patient! Right now, they look like little sprouts. We water them each day!
Secret Science Lab
We are making a secret science lab in our Let's Pretend Centre. It is a place where you mix potions and test them out to see what happens. We have a mini microscope, tweezers, cups, and a scientist coat. We still need to make potions and bottles. We might even move our water centre into our science lab to help with our experiments!
We have started to create safety rules for our Secret Science Lab. We need rules because some potions can be dangerous. We have goggles, gloves, and lab coats to protect ourselves.
Mystery Box and Caterpillars
On Wednesday, we got mail from Boreal Science. It was a huge mystery box with a sign that said 'LIVE SPECIMENS'!
We were so surprised that inside the box there were baby caterpillars! And they are so hungry. They are so small but they have already grown! The caterpillars are going to be Painted Lady butterflies! Painted Lady butterflies look like Monarch butterflies since they both have the same orange and black colours on their wings.
Book Fair
Our class went to the book fair in our school library. We had fun looking at the new books and some of us bought books for home. 2 students also bought books for our class. The books are called 'Frogs on a Log' and 'Please Mr. Panda'. We really love both stories.
Track and Field
Some of us watched the big kids to Track and Field outside in the big field. We saw jumping and running races. We ate freezies too!

The Book with No Pictures
We read a book called 'The Book with No Pictures' by B.J. Novak. The rule of a book with no pictures is that you have to read whatever the page says - no matter what! It had really funny and silly words. One page was so funny everybody laughed!
5 Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree
This week's counting story is our favourite so far! We love pretending to be the crocodile that goes 'SNAP' at the little monkeys.
This song taught us how to count backwards!
Tenzies!
To play Tenzies you need:
-10 Dice and a cup
-A partner or a group
Roll the dice once and pick a target number. Roll all the dice and keep the dice with your number until they all get to your target number. When we do, we say 'Tenzies'! It is so much fun!
Conserve Water
The ECO theme for May is 'Conserve Water'. We started to try to not waste water and we talked about the different ways we can do this. Sometimes we make mistakes but we try our best. We worked with the Primary ECO team and created a wall display to teach the school different ways to conserve water.
-Don't leave the tap on when you're getting soap or brushing your teeth!
EVERY DROP COUNTS!
Planting Marigold Seeds
First, get a pot and put your name on it. Next, put dirt in it and make a little hole. Put seeds in the hole and cover them with dirt. Make sure your plant gets water and sunlight. Then you have to wait for the seeds to grow.
Mantis Egg!
We had a mystery item come to our class. At first, we didn't know what it was. We thought it could be a marshmallow, a pumpkin, a pinecone, a cocoon, an egg, or a wasp nest/hive.
We found out that it was a praying mantis egg! In books, the egg looks really big, but it is small like a golf ball. Our praying mantis egg did not hatch yet, but when it does, it could have 10 to 400 baby mantids inside!
Nature Walk Surprise!
On our nature walk this week we saw lots of trilliums! Trilliums are growing in our woodlot! They are pretty white flowers with 3 petals. Remember not to pick Trilliums! They are Ontario's flower!
