Hi Families,
It's hard to believe that it's already time for the May long weekend! We did not have outdoor day today. It had been rescheduled to Friday June 7th.
SK Families please check your e-mail next week for your invitation to this year's SK graduation.
Here are some stories from the week.
Rover
This week we found out that our Rover has been recalled! We cannot use him anymore this year. We sang him a goodbye song and wrote him a goodbye letter. Now we have a whiteboard to write our morning message on. It is fun to write our own message each day.
Books
We are becoming authors in our classroom! We made a list of topics that we know a lot about and we've started to make our own books. Some of us have painted pictures for the pages and some of us are drawing pictures that we have looked at from books and photos. We sort the pages to decide which order they go in and we read and edit our story to be sure it makes sense. When we finish we get to be the teacher and read our stories to the class.
Kingdom
We have some new blocks in our construction centre that gave us a great idea to make a Kingdom! We have castles, horses and a carriage, knights and dragons, and a king and queen. We've made a plan of the things we know go in a kingdom and now we are starting to make the kingdom ourselves!

Dominos
We got a new box of dominos and we're using them to make mazes. We like lining them up to see them fall. We are trying to see how long of a domino line we can make before it falls.
A World of Kindness
We needed a reminder this week of what it means to be kind and be a friend. We read the story A World of Kindness and talked together about ways we show kindness to others. We realized that we all have something we are good at and something we are still learning and we can show kindness by telling our friends that we are proud of them!
Nature Walk
We have started learning about circles and cycles and the important symbol they are to the Anishinaabe people. We see a circle on our clock to tell the time of day and we talked about the circle of the day. We wake up when the sun is rising and go to school and eat lunch when the sun is high in the sky. On Thursday, we went out to the forest to continue our learning. We got into 4 groups and explored the forest in 4 different directions - East, South, West, and North. We slowly walked away from each other and collected things as we travelled that we brought back to our circle to share at the end. Can you think of a circle or a cycle in your life?
Tulips
We visited the school gardens this week and were so excited to see more tulips growing! Now we have red, yellow, and white tulips! We spent time outside creating kindness rocks and left them in the garden to help make it beautiful.

Birds
We have been watching out our window as more and more birds fly around. We started a list earlier in the year of birds we have seen but have added 5 new birds to our list this week! We started to research these birds and have drawn and painted amazing pictures. We even found a special egg shell on the ground outside and we figured out from our research that it is a robin's egg shell!

Hi Families,
It is hard to believe it is already May! And it has been quite a rainy start! Please remember that we go on nature walks (outdoor learning) 2 times a week so be sure to send your child to school in rain boots as we go rain or shine!
Also, we have had a date change for our Welcome to Kindergarten night for any new JKs joining our classes. Please be advised it is now on June 13.
Here are some stories from this week...
Find it!
As we continue to learn about measurement we played the game 'Find It'. The teacher calls out a challenge like 'find something longer than your foot' and the kids have to look around the room, find and measure something, and bring it to the carpet.

Kinder Stars
Tuesday was our April Kinder Star assembly. We are always excited to see our friends win awards!
Visiting the Garden
Instead of going on a nature with Walk Ms. Darlow, we visited our school's butterfly garden. We helped to dig the dirt and pull the weeds and of course we all looked for more worms! We see some of the tulips that we planted starting to grow! It is so exciting!
Seed Paper
One of our Bluejays made seed paper with her Sparks group and she brought in the materials to teach us how to do it. She was the teacher and ran the whole centre! First, she showed us an example and how to make it and then she used a checklist to make sure everyone got a turn. We made one seed paper to take home and another to plant in our garden. All you need to do is choose a sunny spot in your garden, cover the paper with a little dirt, water it, and wait! Hopefully something will start to grow soon!! Thank you so much to our Bluejay girl and her family - we had lots of fun!

Plastic Bag Challenge
On Wednesday, our plastic bag challenge finished. It was our job to count all the plastic grocery bags that were brought in. We all made piles of 10 and put them into a big bag. Our school collected 916 bags! Ms. Boag took them to Walmart to be properly recycled.

Alectra
On Thursday, Blair from Alectra electrical safety and conservation came to visit the school. He taught us about how to be safe around electricity and the importance of saving electricity.

Nature Walk
We went on a rainy nature walk Thursday to the forest and the kids that were wearing boots got to jump in puddles! We walked very quietly through the forest and we could hear the rain and birds singing. We tried whistling to them and they sang back to us! We also saw a woodpecker!
Movie Night
Some families came back to the school last night for our Movie Night. We had so much fun eating pizza and watching How to Train your Dragon.
Star Wars Day
Friday was Star Wars Day (since May the 4th is a Saturday). We made Yoda and Princess Leia crowns and did Star Wars yoga! May the 4th be with you!

Hi Families,
We hope you enjoyed your long weekend together. Please check your child's folder for information on our upcoming Movie Night on May 2nd. The kids are very excited!
Here are some stories,
Earth Day Garbage Pick Up
On Tuesday we celebrated Earth Day. Mrs. Darlow took us outside on our nature walk to do an Earth Day scavenger hunt! We also worked together to pick up garbage and help the Earth! We wore gloves and used tongs and had to sort the litter we found into garbage and recycling! We also worked on a school mural of our butterfly garden. We found different flowers and put them on the mural.

Mystery Bags
Ms. Tamaki made us mystery bags to go at our measurement centre. They are all closed and have different things inside. We had to measure them using our hands and a scale to find out which one was the heaviest and which was the lightest.
Rhyming Pop
We have been playing Rhyming Pop this week! We have to look at the picture on our bubble and find a partner who has a match! We are becoming rhyming experts!
Ms. Tamaki
On Wednesday, it was Ms. Tamaki's last day. We have loved having her work and learn with us and we will miss her a lot! She gave us each a tub of play-doh and we gave her a book that we made!
Piggie Rhymes
We read The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs and made our own pigs. We gave our pigs a name and then made a silly rhyme to match.

Puppet Show Movie Theatre
Since next week it is Movie Night at Black Walnut we decided to turn our Puppet Show into a puppet show movie theatre. We have made tickets, a popcorn machine, and a juice machine.
Jump Rope for Heart
On Thursday, we went outside to skip for Jump Rope for Heart. We did really well and were so excited when we learned to skip for the first time. We got to dance, play with chalk, and use hula hoops too! Black Walnut raised over $5300.00 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation! Way to Go Wolverines!
Reading Rhymes
A Bluejay brought in a story to read to the class. She chose it from her house because it was full of rhymes! She sat in our teacher chair and read to us!

Worm Saving
On Friday, it was raining again. We went outside to look for worms that had come out of the ground. We found the biggest worms ever! One was as long as Ms. Boag's rain boot! We brought them inside and gave them some dirt to sleep in. We gave them some cucumber and some banana peel too in case they get hungry!

We took some out of our dirt and put them onto brown paper so we could measure them. One was 8 cubes long, one was 10 cubes long, and one was 12 cubes! It was a great day!
